Alice’s death isn’t shown, only her body lying on the floor next to Henry, so it’s not totally impossible that Stranger Things season 5 could make the big reveal that Alice Creel either survived or was spared by Henry, who might have only broken her bones. Building upon the work I did for the previous 3 seasons, I had the opportunity to go much darker with the horror theme, incorporating the evil eyes of Vecna, a swarm of Demobats and the mysterious Creel House. Alice and her mother had horrible deaths, but Stranger Things season 4 made the audience believe that Henry was killed too, only to reveal that he was the real murderer and the one responsible for the horrors of the Upside Down. Illustrated Poster I partnered with Netflix to create the key art for season 4 of Stranger Things. He tried to kill his father the same way but was stopped when the radio was turned on, but Victor was arrested for the murders, while Henry collapsed and entered a coma. One night, during dinner, Henry brutally murdered his mother without touching her, cracking her bones and gouging her eyes out, and he did the same to Alice. 2 Poster Teases a Showdown Between Eleven and Vecna By Shane Romanchick Published The War for Hawkins has begun. Netflix Four Stranger Things trailers were released as. Let's look at each poster and break down what they reveal. The upcoming season premieres May 27, and it’s shaping up to be the darkest, creepiest and biggest chapter yet, with two separate volumes of action-packed episodes. Netflix has released four posters for Stranger Things season 4. Netflix has just released five new posters for the long-awaited fourth season of Stranger Things, giving us a look at some new and familiar. After young Henry Creel mastered his psychokinetic abilities and realized he could manipulate others’ minds and memories, he used these against his family, starting with inducing hallucinations of his time as a World War II soldier in his father, Victor. Stranger Things Season 4 is closer than ever. Hawkins problem is suddenly a whole lot bigger.

I believe the spirit of ‘the immortal’ has been passed down from generation to generation, from myth and legend to the reality of Chinese people crossing the ocean to Australia, where I live now.Mountain Hamlet, Lofty Retreat by Li Zai (Ming Dynasty) Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) has recorded Russia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. I use calligraphy as a link – like a narrator – to connect all the images drawn, including mountains, rivers, people, beasts, strange mountains, and rocks. Many place names are miraculously used to this day. Moreover, in ancient times, there were no maps in China cities and landscapes were marked with words. I refer to the illustrations in the Ming Dynasty’s Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas), such as the human-faced beast and nine-tailed fox, to fully express the extraordinary imagination of our ancient ancestors. The long scroll is hung vertically descending from the sky, with the meaning of respecting the sky. It is romantic and egoistic.Īt the end of the scroll, I end with “Emperor Yu Tames the Flood”, embodying the philosophical concept of diversification with realism. In China, people worship immortality and the eternal soul. In the West, people believe in heaven after death. The vast mythology of ‘the immortal’ is the central theme of my work. So, I began working on the long “Shan Hai Jing” scroll with lines and calligraphy using ink. Then the epidemic hit the city and gave me a wonderful opportunity to realize this idea. I felt that it was the most suitable to paint a long scroll. Around 2018, I acquired a roll of French handmade paper, moderately pliable, 1.4 meters wide and 20 meters long. I have always had a strong interest in this book and wanted to present it as a long scroll. It was written in the Han Dynasty and has 31,000 characters. It began with folklore from the Xia Dynasty (BC2070 – BC1600). “Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) is an ancient book that combines Di Li Zhi (a book that describes a cultural and geographical account of region and its historical evolution), Feng Wu Zhi (a book of local scenery and objects) and Ming Su Zhi (scientific activity of collecting and recording folklore information and the specific description of folklore information). But I think selling it at Bergdorf's would not hurt.Think back to 2002, the over-the-top lipgloss and pencil-thin eyebrow era. And that perfume flacon is stunning! 3:09 AM EDT Anonymous said. I'm especially fond of their Chinese Pavillion chandelier. There ARE a few stores that carry Lobmeyr's glass. I wish the Wiener Blut brand was carried in the States- I'd love to smell Klubwasser and some of their other historical scents. The only perfume I've tried from Austria is Pure Distance, which I liked a lot. Oh, let me know what you end up spraying on that beautiful heirloom. Would be a great idea for Wiener Blut to make Eau de Alma. This sounds absolutely wonderful.a fragrance that my mother would have adored! I too like the idea of the scented handkerchief, and have one that my great-grandmother embroidered for my great-grandfather I think that I will use it for this purpose. What a beautiful flacon! And the fragrance sounds lovely-maybe a good summer scent? WOW, you're absolutely right, it was precisely what I meant, eau de Alma, I would definitely buy that one. I am glad that the perfumes are available on their own though, so they are still affordable. Those two brands have really extravagant and impressive flacons. Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it! I wish I would feel a little more of the alleged attributes of Viennese blood on a Monday morning. I would buy that! :) 2:40 PM EDT Anonymous said. What you describe could be an Alma Mahler celebritiy scent, for example. The use of a handkerchief is truly romantic and quaint, I love it. It really does seem like the Viennese know how to make amazing perfume flacons if Wiener Blut and Puredistance are anything to go by! 2:11 PM EDT Anonymous said. The drydown of Klubwasser sounds fabulous, I'm all for herbal, hay-like and aromatic. What a lovely thing to do, to spray this on your Grandmother's handkerchief - personal and historical at the same time. Mostly though, I enjoyed learning about the name of the company - the thought that Viennese Blood is "full of zest, full of power, full of courage."Ī very enjoyable review, Birgit. :-) 4:37 AM EDT Suzanne said.Ĭan't say that I'm on the lookout for a classic fougere, but if I was, this one certainly sounds good (Indian cumin, lavender and galbanum sounds like a great combo). However, Wiener Blut sounds like a fascinating new brand, I shall be looking forward to hearing more of it. Kind of a modern interpretation of this time. But rather than one imitating the old ones, I suppose I was looking for something which summed up the time of coffee houses, strolls in the Prater, the music of Brahms and Mahler, the paintings of Klimt. You know I have just recently been craving a Vienna 'fin de siecle'- perfume. What an wonderful post, I vividly imagine those viennese gentlemen, in their corsets, sniffing away at their handkerchiefs. I suppose that once, in an age of more primitive sanitation than we enjoy now, carrying a scented handkerchief was a sensible thing to do. What a nice thing it would be to go and buy some new handkerchiefs, and wash and iron and scent them properly. My mother was fond of hankies and would faithfully wash and iron a bunch of them every week. I have a miserable old collections of hankies, all screwed up in my draw. Not only does Klubwasser sound wondeful, but that flacon- incredible. Click to Subscribe to Get Our Free HollywoodLife Daily Newsletter to get the hottest celeb news. We can no longer use the flag to turn people away or distract them from the real issues that face our black communities,” Drew wrote while clapping back at Donald Trump this past summer. “I realize this is not an issue about the American flag. Drew came to realize that this was the real purpose of kneeling during the “National Anthem” at NFL games and apologized. Former San Francisco 49ers‘ star Colin Kaepernick started this form of peaceful protest against systematic racism and racial injustices. Brees and Brady, 45, have a lot of overlapping history in the NFL from their years duking it out as opponents on the field, to a wholesome game of catch Brady played with Brees kids back in 2021. Before his retirement, Drew had sparked controversy by saying that he “will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America” by kneeling amid the Black Lives Matter movement in June of 2020. He has also thrown 571 touchdown passes in his career, which is the second-highest number within the NFL ( Tom Brady currently holds that record with 581 touchdown passes).ĭrew Brees was signed to the San Diego Chargers between 2001-2005, and then joined the New Orleans Saints in 2006. Now my real life‘s work begins!ĭrew is retiring as the current record-holder for throwing the most passing yards in NFL history (80,358). This is not goodbye, rather a new beginning. My goal for the last 15 years was striving to give to you everything you had given to me and more,” Drew added, before concluding on the following note: “I am only retiring from playing football, I am not retiring from New Orleans. “You have molded me, strengthened me, inspired me, and given me a lifetime of memories. We shared some amazing moments together, many of which are emblazoned in our hearts and minds and will forever be a part of us.”ĭrew Brees with his family at Disney Land in March of 2019. Til the very end, I exhausted myself to give everything I had to the Saints organization, my team, and the great city of New Orleans. He continued, “Each day, I poured my heart & soul into being your Quarterback. “After 20 years as a player in the NFL and 15 years as a Saint, it is time I retire from the game of football,” Drew began the video’s caption. The video also arrived with a heartfelt message from Drew. A post shared by Drew Brees of Drew’s sons took turns to say the following message: “After 15 years in the Saints and 20 years in the NFL…our dad….is finally going to retire.” Then, all four of the Brees children exclaimed, “So that he can spend more time with us!” The siblings jumped in celebration while shouting, “Yayyy!!!!” So, if you’re feeling ambitious and want to hear some weirdly soothing sentences on your phone, give it a call at (858) 651-5050. I discovered this number through a testing tool provided by T-Mobile, and it’s pretty much the most poetic, automated thing I’ve ever heard. This number is just one of many test numbers that you’ll find hanging around, and they tend to exist to help phone companies make your service better. So why is there this number just hanging out there, with some random Harvard Sentences being spouted off at all times of day? Well, it’s an easy way to test your mobile phone quality-the “can you hear me now” guys at Verizon and other companies rely on these things to ensure the signal quality is strong. The idea was to test how much a person could mishear before they lost the meaning of a sentence. Some garbled version of the sentences would be played on tape, and volunteers attempted to make sense of what they heard. The sentences are deliberately simple and short-monosyllabic words punctuated by exactly one two syllable word sentence. Sarah Zhang, who wrote an excellent piece on the phenomenon for Gizmodo last year, notes that Harvard researchers focused on the audio testing capabilities of the sentences specifically designed sentences that could be misheard in poor audio conditions. They generally follow a specific pattern-largely single syllables, with one or two multi-syllable words. These phrases, which can be viewed here, have been updated periodically over the years to reflect modern sensibilities. The sentences, colloquially called the “Harvard Sentences” and first introduced by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 1969 as the “IEEE Recommended Practice for Speech Quality Measurements,” have roots in World War II, when Harvard scientists at the school’s Psycho-Acoustic Laboratory helped to test different kinds of noises for wartime military communications. These phrases-there are dozens of them-were chosen because they were phonetically balanced, and therefore should be recognizable and understandable in many audio conditions. Because these sentences were basically decided upon to highlight the nuances of speech. It’s as if the words were chosen from random novels, less for how much they make sense and more about how well each individual sentence flows together.Īnd you’d be right. SMALL BATCH BOURBON WHISKEY AGED IN CHARRED AMERICAN WHITE OAK BARRELS The reason MGM had to get creditor approval for its P&A spend, which I was told is $47M by the way, is because the creditors stand to lose even more money if HTTM does not come out at least break-even. The P&A money comes from the credit facility, and the creditors are weighing in on every key decision. The film cost $50M to make, which is not really that cheap, especially for a movie that should have been made for $20M. The cast keeps things watchable for the whole movie, but in the end it's a huge misfire by all of those involved. Here’s behind-the-scenes info given me by an insider on MGM/UA’s Hot Tub Time Machine, which was supposed to open to $20+M and earned only $13.6M: Enter Hot Tub Time Machine 2, the prime example of an unnecessary sequel. But that doesn't mean a sequel to a successful movie has to happen. That's a fact that everyone has to comprehend. Sequels are almost inevitable in movies today. HTTM2 has no sentimentality, only focusing on ridiculous and mostly unfunny jokes to fill the void. It was a funny movie, but it also had a sense of sentimentality, of having the chance to redo a portion of your life for the better. Heald apparently lost all sense of what made the original film so great. Heald's sense of humor has to involve some sort of pop culture reference to every time-travel movie ever made, as well as overly vulgar humor that is only there for shock value. Apparently it takes three people to find humor in a plot this outrageous. That brings us to Josh Heald, who wrote the story for the first film and was one of the three writers on the screenplay. The movie is not Interstellar, so the writers shouldn't try and explain their time travel science to the audience in an R-rated comedy, especially when explaining it makes the writer dig himself into a hole. The actors spend five whole minutes discussing it before going off for more shenanigans. Although a stupid story might be expected when the words "hot," "tub," "time" and "machine" are the focus, it gets really annoying when the movie tries to be smart in its explanation of time travel. The story in HTTM2 somehow manages to be stupid and convoluted at the same time. If only the rest of the movie had as much fun as its actors seem to. It's nice to see Slater back on the big screen, and his memorable scenes in HTTM2 are its funniest. It seems they all get along and are friends, allowing for the witless banter between the four of them to bring enough laughs to make the movie bearable.Įven the supporting cast is well chosen and memorable, especially Christian Slater as an over-the-top game show host in 2025. Duke, Corddry, Robinson and Scott all play off one another very well. The biggest positive of Hot Tub Time Machine 2, or HTTM2, is the chemistry of its stars. Tracking down Lou's killer, the trio encounters a new friend (Adam Scott) and various adventures in the not-too-distant future. After using the time machine to re-create their lives, Lou (Rob Corddry), Nick (Craig Robinson) and Jacob (Clark Duke) have to time-travel once again after Lou is viciously murdered. "And everyone don't necessarily subscribe to the policies and practices of bigots and racists."įor some, the passage of time has muted the song's ambiguity. "What they were trying to do when they wrote it was say, 'Everybody's talking about the South, but there are some wonderful things about the South,' " he says. He's a composer and professor of music at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who recently arranged the song for marching band and symphony orchestra. I don't think you can go to a party and play that song without everybody singing along."ĭr. "I feel like that personifies a lot of America. "It's honestly an American anthem - it really is," he told NPR. At a concert featuring the reconstituted Lynyrd Skynyrd in Kansas City, fan Nick Paul was tailgating outside before the show. Some still insist that Southern pride, absent the racism, is what "Sweet Home Alabama" is all about. I asked Clayton if appearing on the record was a way of laying claim to it - of saying, "My experience is part of the Alabama experience as well." Her response? "Absolutely. Ronnie Van Zant was among the dead, and he remains the ghost in the room when the intent of the song is discussed.Īnd yet, there she is on the finished track. In 1977 - just three years after the song hit the airwaves - three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd and their road manager, as well as a pilot and copilot, died when their chartered plane went down. That's another thing: The definitive take on the meaning of "Sweet Home Alabama" may have left the world decades ago. I'm sure if you asked the other guys who are not with us anymore and are up in rock and roll heaven, they have their story of how it came about." But he also added that there were "a lot of different interpretations. We put the 'boo, boo, boo' there saying, 'We don't like Wallace,' " Rossington said. "A lot of people believed in segregation and all that. Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington co-wrote "Sweet Home Alabama," and in the Showtime film he addressed that line. In 1963, when he was elected to his first term, Wallace famously said, "I draw the line in the dust and toss the gauntlet before the feet of tyranny, and I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow and segregation forever." "In Birmingham, they love the governor (boo! boo! boo!) It's an integral part of our nation's history." "At the root of it is a very human dilemma of bigotry and stereotyping," Kemp says. Mark Kemp, originally from Ashboro, N.C., offers one perspective he's the author of a book called Dixie Lullaby: A Story of Music, Race and New Beginnings in a New South, a memoir about his relationship with rock and roll from the region. And in the documentary, Van Zant offered this: "Everybody thinks we're a bunch of drunken rednecks. Back then, Lynyrd Skynyrd performed in front of a large Confederate flag - at the suggestion of its record label. " From what I'm told you were born in Canada."Įven as the song was positioned to dispel some stereotypes of the South, the band was embracing others. "What are you talking about, you know?" Van Zant said. A Southern man don't need him around, anyhow |
